When PNG to JPG helps
Screenshots and photos saved as PNG are often surprisingly large. PNG is lossless, so with photos full of complex color the file grows quickly. Converting to JPG can cut the size to a fraction with almost no visible difference, which helps when you hit email attachment or upload limits.
Choosing a quality value
Quality goes from 50 to 100. Start at 90 and look at the result. If you need it smaller, try 80 or 75. Most photos strike a good balance between 75 and 85. The percentage change from the original is shown next to the result.
Things to watch
- JPG has no transparency, so transparent backgrounds become white. Keep logos that need a transparent background as PNG or WEBP.
- Images with lots of text, lines or flat color (charts, text in screenshots) can get smudgy edges as JPG. These are sometimes smaller and cleaner as PNG.
- JPG loses a little quality every time it is saved again. Keep the original PNG.
