Why convert JPG to PNG
JPG throws away a little detail every time it is saved, so editing and re-saving it repeatedly blurs edges and adds blotches. Converting to PNG before you start editing means it won't get any worse, no matter how many times you save. Some sites and apps also accept only PNG uploads.
Good to know
- Quality does not improve. Detail already lost in the JPG can't be restored. PNG simply stops it from getting worse.
- The background doesn't become transparent. A white JPG background stays white in PNG. To remove it, use remove a solid background.
- Files usually get bigger. Photos can be several times larger as PNG. The increase is shown next to the result.
If the file got too big
If you don't need to edit it, consider WEBP. WEBP supports both lossy compression and transparency, so web images can be much lighter than PNG. See choosing between PNG, JPG and WEBP.
