When it helps
- Sideways photos: turn photos taken with the phone on its side by 90°.
- Profile and product photos: store listings and profile pictures are usually square. A 1:1 crop keeps the center.
- YouTube thumbnails and slides: crop to 16:9 to fill the screen.
- Vertical video images: use 9:16 for Shorts, Reels and Stories.
- Mirrored selfies: if text looks backwards in a front-camera shot, turn on flip horizontally.
Order and reference point
Rotation and flipping happen first, then the rotated image is cropped to the ratio. The crop keeps the exact center and trims equal amounts from both sides (or top and bottom). To resize as well, enter a max width or height. For example, crop to 1:1 with a max width of 1000 to get a 1000×1000 product image.
Common ratios
| Ratio | Used for |
|---|---|
| 1:1 | Social feeds, profile pictures, store listings |
| 4:3 | Compact cameras, older slide formats |
| 3:2 | DSLR and mirrorless photos, photo prints |
| 16:9 | YouTube thumbnails, wallpapers, slides |
| 9:16 | Shorts, Reels, Stories, phone wallpapers |
